BOLIVIAN President Evo Morales has said recovering state’s control of natural resources is the best way for countries to achieve economic development. Meanwhile, Latin American aboriginal peoples have demanded the indigenous people’s right to their own educational systems at a meeting in La Paz, Bolivia.

During an inspection of possible sites earmarked for building the South American Parliament headquarters in Cochabamba, Bolivia, President Morales insisted on the importance of recovering the state’s control of natural resources as the best way to attain economic development. Already Bolivia has nationalised gas and oil ownership and the telecommunication sector is currently under negotiations.

President Morales, according to the Granma Daily, invited members of the newly created South American Union of Nations (UNASUR) to create a single South American currency. He suggested the currency to be called the pacha, a Quechua word that means earth. “The idea came out of many discussions. We, looking towards the future, have proposed the name of pacha,” said President Morales.

He said while there was consensus that South America should use a single currency, Venezuela and other countries of the bloc had also proposed names for it.

President Morales said the Bank of the South, being promoted by Venezuela and other countries of the region, could become the equivalent of a South American Central Bank to regulate the economies of its members.

Meanwhile, representatives of Latin American aboriginal peoples attending the Tenth Indigenous Congress demanded their right to their own education, respecting their own values and tradition.
