JAPAN and the Food and Agriculture Organisation have given irrigation pumps and pipes worth US$91 800 to smallholder farmers in Domboshava. The Japanese Embassy and FAO handed over the 270 treadle pumps and pipes at a ceremony at Mutake Primary School.
The Member of the House of Assembly for the area Cde Herbert Murerwa, Japanese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Takeo Yoshikawa, FAO representative Mrs Nerisa Pilime, Community Technology Development Trust agriculturists, the local leadership and hundreds of villagers witnessed the event.
Mr Yoshikawa said the 170 pumps his country contributed were part of a consignment of 200 provided by his government under a US$59 653 grant. The other 30 were given to farmers in Seke District as part of efforts to ensure food security in Zimbabwe.
"We fully recognise the need for food security and have been working with various partners so that local communities do not have to rely on food hand outs in times of poor rainfall," he said.
Mrs Pilime, whose organisation contributed 100 pumps, said they had been working with CTDT in the distribution of the foot-operated pumps. This was aimed at improving food and nutrition among vulnerable households in Zimbabwe.
