Govt hails monetary review statement

GOVERNMENT has hailed the recent Monetary Policy Interim Review Statement issued by Reserve Bank Governor Dr Gideon Gono and urged all stakeholders to effectively implement it for the country’s economic growth. In a statement, the Minister of State for Policy Implementation in the office of the President and Cabinet, Cde Webster Shamu, said the governor’s statement set up the path for economic growth and Government would closely work with the RBZ in following up the raised issues.

"The statement highlights the need for Zimbabweans to now take seriously the urgent calls for effective policy and programme implementation for the nation to turn around this economy.

"We support the governor’s call for persistent implementation of economic policies and for continuous review of the implementation process in Government.

"We have repeatedly stated that the missing link is implementation. As a department, we are concerned that in a number of cases, the implementation process by certain Government agencies has been poor and we wish to treat this statement as a clarion call for implementation," said Cde Shamu.

He said all stakeholders had integral roles to play in "putting Zimbabwe first" given that the country’s economic performance is currently under scrutiny by several nations in the Southern African region.

"Following the recent support given to His Excellency, the President, by the Sadc heads of state and government, it is, therefore, important that we stress to policy implementers the need for persistent implementation of policies and agreed programmes.

"Now that the economic and political support from our neighbours is guaranteed, we need to play our part as Government ministries, departments parastatals and private sector to move with speed in the implementation of financial, economic and fiscal policies," said Cde Shamu.

The minister applauded the RBZ for putting in place several measures on tourism, mining, agriculture subsidies, and revival of rural incomes for the development of the nation.

Cde Shamu said the just-ended 48th edition Zimbabwe International Trade Fair was a resounding success, having beaten the previous one in terms of both quality and quantity of exhibition.

He said there was an increased participation by small to medium enterprises, a development which adds value to the Government’s efforts to mainstream SMEs into national activities.
