LETTER - We need credible politicians
We need credible politiciansBy Sunday Chanda

I am persuaded to commend your credible Post for the continued role you have played in ensuring that never again should Zambia be taken for granted by those entrusted to take care of the welfare of the masses. Your courage in calling Chiluba a thief and fighting it to the point that the courts of law and the civil society agreed with you - indeed The Post is a neccessary force in our democratic dispensation.
I am very sure that the generation that can provide credible leadership to this country beyond 2011 is that of Nevers Mumba, Sakwiba Sikota and Hakainde Hichilema. We need to open a new page.
This is the reason we need the new constitution in place as it will be the force behind the political transformation that Zambia is in dire need of. This generation of leaders must ensure that they portray exemplary public conduct and should begin to account for all their deeds and misdeeds.
So far the revelation by The Post in its editorial last week concerning UPND president Hakainde Hichilema and the purchase on the former Lima Bank property in which he presently resides in Lusaka needs to be discussed and if possible, investigated.
Without any ill motive, I believe that HH must come out in the open and clear his name on this score. He is already a public figure and all tendencies of corruption by those who seek the highest office must not be tolerated.
The same must apply for all colleagues and citizens in the nation. If Chiluba corruptly acquired his property in Kabulonga, the nation needs to know and if HH corruptly acquired the former Lima Bank property, then he must account for it.
Lima Bank was a people’s bank and if the people entrusted to handle its restructuring and privatisation played a dirty game in enriching themselves, they must be made to account.
A number of questions will be asked such as, was procedure followed and to what extent did transparency prevail? How about ethics?
The truth is that we cannot expect to build societies of gold with men of clay.
Let those who aspire to serve the people lead by example. Let us as citizens begin to seriously engage the younger generation of politicians and we must make sure that they account.
