Tsvangirai blasts Mutambara

MDC faction leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai yesterday made a scathing attack on rival faction president Professor Arthur Mutambara, hitting the final nail in the coffin of their much publicised unity talks.

Stung by Prof Mutambara’s criticism that he was a "weak and indecisive leader", at a Press conference in Harare on Saturday, Mr Tsvangirai yesterday told his supporters at a rally in Kuwadzana 4 that the rival faction’s leader was wasting time by criticising him.

"We need unity of all progressive forces in this country. The enemy is not Tsvangirai. The enemy is (President) Mugabe. If you focus on Tsvangirai, urikupedzera matombo pazvidhiidhii," he said.

Mr Tsvangirai was irked by Prof Mutambara’s statement that the two factions would never unite as Mr Tsvangirai had spurned an offer to become the sole opposition candidate in next year’s presidential election.

Prof Mutambara told journalists on Saturday that he wondered whether Mr Tsvangirai was fit to be the president of Zimbabwe if he did not understand the strategic value of unity of purpose.

"If Morgan Tsvangirai is such a weak and indecisive leader who cannot embrace what ordinary Zimbabweans are demanding (unity of purpose), is he worthy of the presidency of this country? Zimbabweans deserve better leadership," he said.

"Tsvangirai is a weak leader who is devoid of strategic thinking. Such a leader cannot lead the country. He has no vision."

Yesterday Mr Tsvangirai said his faction would launch its presidential and parliamentary campaign on September 9 at the Zimbabwe Grounds in Highfield.

He, however, said his faction wanted a number of issues to be addressed before the polls and these included a new Zimbabwe constitution and what he called a level playing field in which every citizen would be accorded the right to vote.

"If (President) Mugabe wins in a free and fair contest, I will be the first to congratulate him," Mr Tsvangirai said.

The opposition leader said his party had respect for those who fought for the liberation of the country but this should not be used as an excuse for corruption.
