THE local authority in Mansa has demolished about 15 shops at Muchinka Main Market as they were built on top of sewer lines that cater for the entire market and surrounding compounds. In an interview, Mansa Town Clerk Bwanga Kapumpa said the council had realised its mistake in allowing setting up of shops on top of sewer lines.
“As a council, we made a big blunder and we have since realised that this has resulted in blocking of the septic pipes, which have not been functioning for the past three and half years, owing to the error when building was being done,” he said.
Kapumpa said the finance and general purpose committee resolved to demolish the shops despite the loss that the council had to incur as the exercise was being done in an effort to correct past mistakes.
He said the council had the responsibility to provide proper sanitation, adding that it was against this background that it was working in line with the ‘Make Zambia Clean and Healthy’ campaign’.
Kapumpa disclosed that the council would soon commence painting of market premises that had been deserted by marketeers who were trading outside the premises.
He explained that some of the shops that have been a barrier to the market entrance would also be demolished to give easy access to the market.
