In a statement, HWUZ national disciplinary committee secretary Kolala Mulenga and Lusaka provincial secretary Bruno Tembo, noted that what Mwale is alleged to have done is an offence that requires severe punishment "It is very unfortunate that the uniformed officer who is supposed to protect and defend the citizens has become the enemy," he said.

"As a union we cannot sit idle watching our members being terrorised and brutalised by enemies of national development. This offence requires a severe punishment to the offender."

The duo stated that the nurses worked under very difficult conditions just like police officers.

"It is even worse for a nurse who is not accommodated by the state and instead is given K100,000 housing allowance which can only allow someone to stay in George or Misisi compounds," the duo stated.
"A poor nurse who instead of nursing five to ten patients per shift, is nursing more than 50 patients due to understaffing.

A dedicated nurse who has been manipulated by government by paying them meagre salary of less than a million per month."

Mulenga and Tembo added that the union would not condone indiscipline from nurses and that if the nurses had done anything wrong in executing their duties Mwale should have found a better way of resolving the problem.

Sub-inspector Mwale is on Thursday evening alleged to have beaten up two nurses after the child he had taken to University Teaching Hospital (UTH) died shortly after admission.
