Zimbabwe, Brazil seek to enhance trade relations

Zimbabwe and Brazil are set to hold a high-powered meeting later this year aimed at unlocking trade opportunities that exist between the two countries. Foreign affairs deputy minister, Reuben Marumahoko, said this on Friday at a reception to mark Brazil’s 185 independence anniversary in Harare.

He said the meeting, set for December, would help strengthen the cordial relationship that exist between Zimbabwe and Brazil, as well as propel the two countries to work together in various fields such as education and culture.

"It is pleasing to note that the legal framework for cooperation between Brazil and Zimbabwe has already been established by the singing of the Technical Cooperation and Joint Permanent Commission agreement in Ro de Janeiro on September 10, 2006, he said.

"The first session on the commission has been set for December this year in Brasilia, Brazil. I am optimistic that the meeting will result in significant cooperation in various sectors of our economies for the mutual benefit of our people."

He said a 19-member trade delegation led by Industry and International Trade permanent secretary, Christian Katsande was in Brazil last May to scout business opportunities in the areas of mining, agriculture and energy, particularly bio-fuels.

"Zimbabwe is ready to learn from Brazil’s vast experience in the use of bio-fuels," Marumahoko said.

He expressed the hope that agreements on education, sports, and culture would be finalised soon.

Brazilian ambassador to Zimbabwe, Rul de Taunay said his country was looking forward to the cooperation as both countries possessed vast business and trade opportunities.

He said mutual collaboration would benefit future generations from both countries. — New Ziana.
