COPPERBELT Permanent Secretary Jennifer Musonda has said the province needs about K1.5 billion to replace the damaged culverts that were washed away during the 2006/2007 rainy season. Musonda however said the province had received K550 million from the Office of the Vice-President under the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit to repair the culverts.
“Most of the culverts that were washed away would not be replaced because they have not been funded. After we did an assessment, we came up with K1.5 billion in order for us to do all the works. So basically we still need more support in that area,” she said.
She said the culverts to be worked on were those in Kitwe’s Garneton, Masaiti and Mpongwe districts.
And Musonda said the Congolese government had requested the Zambian government to help that country find a contractor that would tar the road that passes through no man’s land.
This is in line with a pact that was signed in 2006 during the Congo/Zambia joint meeting when the two governments agreed to tar the road.
However, Musonda said the road had been tarred from the Zambian side while the other half had been left to the Congolese government.
