CHIEFTAINESS Malembeka of the Lamba people in Mpongwe district has said it would be disastrous for Zambians to allow a thief or crooked person to succeed President Levy Mwanawasa. Chieftainess Malembeka said allowing a thief or crooked person to succeed President Mwanawasa would plunge Zambia into worse poverty and it would be difficult or impossible for the country to recover.

The traditional leader was speaking on Monday when Copperbelt minister Mwansa Mbulakulima visited her palace to discuss a number of developmental programmes in her area.

She said Zambians should be fair and realistic to themselves by ensuring that the successor to President Mwanawasa was an individual who would be able to sustain the current economic achievements.

She said President Mwanawasa’s successor should be an upright individual.

“We do not want crooks or thieves who may end up selling the country. If we decide that President Mwanawasa should be succeeded by a thief or crooked person, then we shall plunge the country into worse poverty,” chieftainess Malembeka warned.

She also said most of the pupils in her chiefdom were failing to score high marks to go to Ibenga or Fatima boarding high schools because teachers were spending most of their time drinking beer in bars and taverns.
