President Levy Mwanawasa yesterday fired Southern Province minister Joseph Mulyata following his arrest by the Anti-Commission Commission for abuse of authority of his office. And Mulyata yesterday thanked President Mwanawasa for having given him an opportunity to serve the country as minister. President Mwanawasa, through his special assistant for press and public relations, John Musukuma, announced Mulyata’s dismissal.
In his letter to Mulyata, President Mwanawasa stated: “I am informed that you have finally been arrested and must have appeared in court for plea on 17th December 2007. Under the circumstances and assuming that the Anti Corruption Commission are now serious, I regret that I have no option but to remove you as Provincial Minister pending the outcome of those criminal proceedings.”
Meanwhile, Mulyata accepted his dissmisal wholeheartedly.
“I will continue to serve him. He is the only one I will serve," said Mulyata.
Mulyata is charged with abuse of authority of office and will appear in court in February.
Particulars of the offence are that Mulyata, being a person employed in the public service as a provincial minister for Southern Province between July 5 and July 13, 2007 in Livingstone, abused authority of his office by directing officers from the Road Traffic and Safety Agency to release a Germins Motoways bus registration number GML 06 belonging to Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba that had been impounded for evading the weighbridge without paying the required fine, arbitrarily and prejudicial to the interest of the government of Zambia.
