NATIONAL Democratic Focus (NDF) president Ben Mwila has attributed the existing confrontation in Zambian politics to the tendency by people to solely depend on politics as a career. In an interview, Mwila who is Nchelenge NDF member of parliament said politics of confrontation was bad and unacceptable.

“Politics should not be a career; that is the mistake that we make in this country. Because people don’t have any fall back, they tend to be confrontational to defend their cause,” he said.

“They will just sit and wait for you to call them so that they issue statements and get heard, regardless of who it hurts.”

He said much as it was good to articulate politics, there was need to inculcate a new culture especially in the youth, and that they could pursue alternative careers to politics.

And Mwila advised opposition political parties to get organised if they were to form government in 2011.

“If the NCC adopts recommendations of the Mung’omba CRC that a president should be elected by 50 plus 1, it will mean that for one to be president, they would have to campaign in all corners of Zambia so I think there will be need for the opposition to start talking to each other in an effort to come together,” Mwila said.

“Even the ruling party should start lobbying to entice some opposition parties that they can work with because MMD on their own cannot muster 50 plus 1.”

Mwila said the outcome of the Kanyama by-election had taught the opposition that with their continued fragmentation, they could not form government.
