(HERALD) MDC lacks purpose-driven politics

MDC lacks purpose-driven politics

EDITOR — I am concerned by the absence of clear policies on the part of the opposition on how critical issues in this country can be resolved. We have the economy, the land question and nation building. When I hear claims by MDC Tsvangirai officials that they won the election, I strain to hear how, having ‘‘won’’ they plan to take this country forward. I worry, when what should be a government-in-waiting and a president-in-waiting make alarmist statements predicting violence.

I shudder when I hear Tsvangirai claim, like he did on SkyNews, that, "even if I did not get the 50 percent there is no need for a re-run". I shudder at the wanton violation of the law by people who got onto the political stage claiming to be sticklers for the rule of law.

I worry about the lack of tact, diplomacy and discretion in choice of words by key MDC personnel who are quoted by international media — for a purported government-in-waiting.

As a Zimbabwean I expect more diplomacy, more conciliatory and magnanimous words when people talk about the likely development of a run-off.

One would expect alarmist statements to come from supporters in the lower echelons of the party.

Surely, MDC Tsvangirai can’t continue to behave like an activist movement, it has a simple majority in the House of Assembly, we expect sober judgment from all in its leadership.

It is in this breath that many will miss the sanity Professor Welshman Ncube brought to the opposition, My heart bleeds when the perpetually angry Tendai Bitis speak in the highest and fastest of tones. If we are to have such people as ministers, God save us.

I decry the absence of purpose-driven politics in the opposition.
