THE government will purchase 27, 980 x 50 kilogramme bags of white maize in Kawambwa district this marketing season. District administrative officer Mwita Kasengele yesterday said the purchase would be done through the Food Reserve Agency (FRA). Kasengele was speaking in Kawambwa when he officiated at this year’s Luena agriculture block show whose theme was: “Growth in Diversity”.
He said the government would purchase the maize in the district and that two satellite depots have already been selected. Kasengele added that only white maize would be bought after being certified by agriculture officers in the district.
He also said that the government would be buying one 50kg bag of maize at the floor price of K45 000.
And Kasengele said the government had a programme of opening up farming blocks throughout the country.
He said this was in an effort to ensure increased food production, security and create job opportunities in rural areas.
Kasengele said Kawambwa district was a beneficiary to the programme citing the Luena farm block and added that the government had already released some funds.
Kasengele noted that the funds released would be used for pegging and construction of access roads in the area.
