CHIEF Shaibila of Mkushi District has appealed to the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) to promptly assess the hunger situation in his chiefdom. In an interview, chief Shaibila said in view of the floods and poor harvest that hit the area during the last farming season, there was need for the government to avert the looming food shortage in the district.
“Last farming season we had too much rainfall which made our crops to perform badly. This also caused extensive damage to our roads and bridges, so hunger is a possibility,” he said.
Chief Shaibila said due to the poor road network in the district, most farmers in the area faced difficulties in ferrying their commodities to market places.
Chief Shaibila said there was an urgent need for the government to help people with food as the hunger problem could continue until the next farming season.
