ZAMBIA still lacks a culture of honouring those who generously contributed to the independence struggle, Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) executive director Dr Neo Simutanyi has said. Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, Dr Simutanyi expressed sadness that names of people who fought for the country’s independence have gone into oblivion.

“Names such as that of Harry Nkumbula, Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe and many others have gone into oblivion,” he said. “Few individuals have come to be celebrated as the only ones who played an important role in the construction of the Zambian nation.”

He also said CPD, in partnership with the Press Freedom Committee of The Post (PFC) and the Lusaka National Museum will commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula’s death.

He explained that the commemoration which would be non-partisan seeks to celebrate the life and contribution of Nkumbula to Zambian politics and national liberation.

And PFC general secretary Sheikh Chifuwe said it was important to remember the country’s heroes for people to appreciate the nation’s history.

Chifuwe said the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Nkumbula’s death would take place at the Lusaka National Museum from October 8 to 10, 2008.
