Mongu eagerly awaits Michael Sata's arrival and rally as everything here is now mwa mukolo, opposition Patriotic Front (PF) Western Province campaign leader Vivian Mubukwanu disclosed yesterday. Mubukwanu, who is camped in the province for purposes of campaigns, said PF has gained grip in Western Province and the MMD had been uprooted and was almost non-existent in the province.

He said it was clear from all the centres visited in the province, with the exemption of Shang'ombo, that the MMD had gone to sleep in the area. Mubukwanu said whereas it was unthinkable for anyone in Western Province to campaign or vote for PF in 2006, he was confident that by the time the campaigns are concluded before October 30, the MMD would be unheard of.

“The response we have received has been overwhelming compared to the 2006 experience,”

Mubukwanu said. “You will be amazed how many people have changed. I have been to three royal establishments so far and I can proudly say that the notion that Western Province is an MMD stronghold is long gone because the party does not exist. Everywhere you go, it is mwamukolo, mwamukulo (in the boat, in the boat).”

Mubukwanu said the people of Western Province were tired of the MMD's fake promises because the ruling party had not done anything about the high poverty levels in the province.

He said the main schools and hospitals in Western Province were built during the Kaunda regime, making the people feel neglected.

“If you look at the road from Kaoma to Lukulu, it's only 205 kilometres but the government is failing to work on it and yet it has spent a lot of money on the Mongu-Kalabo road which has not yielded the desired results,” Mubukwanu said.

He said the only worry for PF and the people of Western Province was the rigging assertions against the MMD.

“We have assured votes in the people. The only worry is that their votes will be stolen. We would like to appeal to the police to play their role diligently because the people won't accept to be deceived,” said Mubukwanu.
