GNU needs actual belief

THE ongoing political crisis in Zimbabwe is now causing untold human hardships to the ordinary civilians. Some of the principals on the negotiating table are lacking “actual belief”.

Martin Luther King Junior said: “It is one thing to agree that the goal of integration is morally and legally right, it is another thing to commit oneself positively and actively to the ideal of integration- the former is intellectual assent and the latter is actual belief. These are days that demand practices to match professions. This is no day to pay lip service to integration; we must pay life service to it”.

What is required for the negotiating principals is to bear in mind that the oppressed people of Zimbabwe cannot remain oppressed forever. The people of Zimbabwe have already expressed their will and that needs to be respected. Life for ordinary Zimbabweans is now unbearable.

The endless political talks are leaving civilians with no substantive government and this has virtually crippled all public and social services. A current wave of food shortages compounded by illegal forex dealers is leaving millions of people on the brink of starvation. “I have the audacity to believe that people everywhere can have three meals a day for their minds, and dignity, equality, and justice for their spirits” - Martin Luther King Junior. Worse still the impoverished nation is already afflicted by rampant inflation, inadequate healthcare, sky high unemployment, power shortages and involuntary school closures.

It is not going to be long before the people of Zimbabwe start asking fundamental questions. There will come a time when the oppressed masses will start demanding freedom.

The principals involved in the process of integration need to "put Zimbabwe first". The principals involved need to realize that: “When evil men plot, good men must plan and when evil men burn and bomb, good men must build and bind. When evil men shout ugly words of hatred, good men must commit themselves to glories of love. Where evil men would seek to perpetuate the status quo, good men must seek to bring into being a real order of justice.” – Martin Luther King Junior.
