PATRIOTIC Front (PF) president Michael Sata has said President Rupiah Banda's false promises during the campaign period are now haunting him.
In an interview, Sata said President Banda's admission that he had faced more problems than any other president clearly indicated that he did not know how to govern but only to be governed.
“This is what happens when you have a government which has no vision. This is just the beginning of problems and where you have a President who has no vision, then which direction are you heading to as a country?” Sata asked. “I had a programme for this country and I told you what I wanted to do. Everyone knows about that.”
Sata said it was premature for President Banda to start complaining that he had faced a lot of problems as compared to past presidents when he had only been in power for a few months. Sata said President Banda's statement shows that he has failed to rule the country.
“He has not faced any problems yet because he just wanted to add to his CV [Curriculum Vitae] that he went to State House,” Sata said.
He said this was not the first time the Zambian economy was facing challenges for President Banda to start comparing himself with the three former Republican presidents because he had not yet presented his first national budget.
“What do you expect when you have a President who does not know anything about the government?” Sata asked. “He only knows how to be governed and not how to govern.”
Sata said that former president Frederick Chiluba and the late president Levy Mwanawasa faced more challenges than what President Banda claimed to be facing.
“During the reign of Chiluba, there was a countrywide outbreak of cholera and critical food shortages and late president Levy Mwanawasa had a challenge of dealing with massive corruption left by Chiluba's government,” Sata said.
He said President Banda's admission that the country was facing difficulties was a clear indication that he was hiding in president Mwanawasa's funeral during the campaigns.
“Rupiah was singing about continuity and legacy of the late president Mwanawasa's programme. He was hiding in Mwanawasa's funeral. But if you look at him now, what continuity is there?” asked Sata.
