UPND Nakambala ward councillor Shaderick Mwiinga, whose election had earlier been nullified by his party, has won the mayoral election in Mazabuka.
And Mwiinga said his election was a blow to the decision taken by the district executive committee of the UPND which had nullified his election for the same position. Mwiinga scooped the position after beating rivals Annie
Mangunje of Nega Nega ward who polled seven votes and Mazabuka central ward councillor Lloyd Buumba who scored three votes.
Mazabuka municipal council director of administration who was returning officer for the polls declared Shaderick Mwiinga winner after he got 14 votes after a re-run.
In the first round, Mwiinga and Mangunje had a tie of 10 votes each while Buumba had polled 5 but the results changed during the re-run.
Hangoma also declared Richard Malambo as deputy mayor after going through unopposed.
And Mwiinga said the nullification of his election prior to the special council meeting, which saw him emerge winner, was frustrating and disappointing.
Mwiinga said his election as mayor was an uphill battle because of some forces that had teamed up to decampaign him even from his employer, Zambia Sugar Company.
Meanwhile, Mwiinga has pledged to resolve the serious water problems facing residents of Kapufi, Kabobola and newly opened residential areas.
He said it was wrong and unfair to continue subjecting residents to covering long distances in search of water when the local authority was there to lobby or provide the necessary leadership to address the situation.
Mwiinga also said the repair of the Mazabuka-Kafue highway would be his priority because of the alarming number of people that had died due to its bad state.
