COUNCIL of Churches in Zambia (CCZ) general secretary Reverend Suzanne Matale has said the church wants to see a constitution-making process dominated by ordinary Zambians.

Rev Matale said it was unfortunate that a lot of money was being spent on the NCC when the Mung’omba Constitution Review Commission had spent money going round the country.

“It is sad to hear that they have only spent K44 billion. That is a lot of money, but they are mentioning it as if it is a small amount,” she said.

“Do they know how much even a K1 billion would help poor Zambians?”

She said it was disappointing that there were even some people who wanted to have the NCC mandate extended for greedy purposes.

“If anything, they could have dealt with it for half or quarter the amount of money they have used because most of the work was done by the CRC,” she said.

Matale said it was unfortunate that politicians had a tendency of making themselves bosses to people who voted for them.

“People are bosses to political leaders because they are the ones who put them in power and not the other way round,” said Matale.

“So even in the constitution-making process, ordinary people should dominate and instead of politicians having an upper hand.”
