HEALTH authorities in Mazabuka have with immediate effect closed Ndeke Clinic and turned it into a Cholera centre to cater for the increased cases from other townships where the disease has spread to.
This means that all medical services have been suspended except for Cholera-related cases.
The authorities have also transferred all the 22 Cholera patients who were admitted at Ndeke Basic School Cholera centre to the clinic and redeployed all the staff to the District Hospital.
Mazabuka district commissioner, Tyson Hamaamba, confirmed the development and said residents from Ndeke, Nakambala and Showgrounds seeking medical attention would now be required to get assistance from the Mazabuka District Hospital.
Acting district director of health Ellias Hamatanga informed Hamaamba that although the closure of the clinic would impact negatively on service delivery, his office had no choice but to turn Ndeke into a Cholera centre to avoid the quick spread of the disease.
Hamatanga also said his office had taken such measures to ensure that the school calendar which begins on January 12, 2009 was not disturbed.
And a check at Ndeke Basic School last evening found health workers shifting their operational tools and patients to Ndeke Clinic which had been turned into a Cholera centre.
