SENIOR chief Bright Nalubamba of the Ila people in Namwala has said the government should not be ashamed to admit its failures to sort out the current economic crisis being experienced.
And chief Nalubamba has appealed to politicians in the country to desist from belittling and insulting each other in view of the economical challenges the country is facing.
In an interview, chief Nalubamba said the government should admit lack of capacity to resolve economic problems the people of Zambia were facing and must invite workable interventions from stakeholders.
“There is nothing to be ashamed of to accept that one doesn’t have the capacity to resolve the problems of high mealie-meal prices, massive job losses and the pending closure of mines on the Copperbelt, high prices on farming inputs and other necessities,” he said.
He said it was wrong for the government to pretend to have the capacity to address the economic problems when in the actual sense it had run out of ideas.
Chief Nalubamba said Zambians needed a government which would offer hope to the hopeless through collective strength and wisdom from major stakeholders, adding that ignoring political leaders such as Patriotic Front president Michael Sata and UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema was detrimental to resolving the economic crisis and the attainment of national development.
He advised Zambians to stop thinking and looking at President Rupiah Banda and PF leader Michael Sata as a problem and obstacle to dialogue for a possible solution to be found to the country’s economic crisis.
“If that is what they are, then the people of Zambia should pressure Sata and [President] Banda to sit and resolve their political differences in order to create an atmosphere for dialogue with all stakeholders. It is not right for Zambians to be hanged like that, as traditional leaders we shall not accept seeing our people dying of hunger, our young people without jobs and farmers without inputs,” he said.
And chief Nalubamba said the exchange of insults demonstrated by
some political leaders was unwise and undermineed the level of democracy in the country.
He has since called on first Republican president Dr Kenneth Kaunda to initiate a roundtable meeting for Sata, Hichilema and President Banda to discuss the best ways of assisting Zambians out of the current economic problems.
