NAMISA director resigns to join politics10 February, 2009 01:17:00
National Media Institute of Southern Africa (NAMISA) National Director, Innocent Chitosi has abdicated from his position after he presented his nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to contest in the forthcoming general elections as an independent parliamentary candidate. NAMISA has confirmed the development in a media statement made available to Nyasa Times.
“Following the development, NAMISA NGC held an extraordinary meeting on Saturday February 7, 2009 where Mr. Chitosi was also present and confirmed to the NGC his intention to participate in the Parliamentary Elections.
“Mr. Chitosi informed the NGC that he understood the fact that his conditions of service do not permit him to participate in active politics and as such, he handed in his resignation during the meeting,” a statement signed by NAMISA chairperson Brian Ligomeka said.
The statement said the media body realized that there in a crucial period as they prepares for May 3, World Press Freedom Day and that Chitosi was coordinating several donor-funded projects, they have allowed him to serve his notice and fulfill all his other contractual obligations as he was the head of NAMISA Secretariat.
“However during the period that Mr. Chitosi serves his notice and other contractual obligations, he will not officially speak on behalf of the organization and all communication will therefore be handled by the National Chairperson, Mr. Brian Ligomeka,” said the statement.
“In the meantime Namisa will advertise for the position of National Director and find a suitable candidate to replace him. The NGC has devised administrative strategies that will ensure that things continue to tick at the Namisa Secretariat during this transition period.
“ Namisa wishes Chitosi luck in his new career as a politician and pray that when he makes it to Parliament, fighting for press freedoms will remain top on his agenda.
