Tobacco Control Commission General Manager, Godfrey Chapola, says uncertainty surrounds this year’s tobacco sales, as buyers have ordered tobacco whose amount he is not sure they would be able to honour payment.
He said buyers were looking for between 206 and 223 million kgs of burley, 40 to 45 million kgs of flue and around 6 million kgs of dark fired tobacco, but the commission was not sure they would be able to pay due to the global financial crisis.
“We are just keeping our fingers crossed at the moment,” he said.
He said any sudden negative changes could have huge economic consequences for Malawi.
But Secretary for Agriculture and Food Security, Andrew Daudi, has said all is well in terms of production and that there was nothing to fear.
