MMD spokesperson Benny Tetamashimba yesterday asked fellow national executive committee (NEC) members and ministers who challenged President Rupiah Banda last year to announce in today's NEC meeting that they will challenge the President at the convention, if they are not cowards.
In an interview, Tetamashimba said it was not good for some NEC members and ministers to continue hiding their intentions even when it was clear that they would want to ambush the convention by announcing their intentions at the last minute.
“There will be a NEC meeting tomorrow [today], and I hope those with intentions will come out because it is not good to be hiding. Rupiah Banda has come out now, you people were saying I don't know what I am doing when I said Rupiah Banda will stand,” Tetamashimba said.
“For me I know that Katele Kalumba is going to stand. Of course, [Ng'andu] Magande will stand because he has not come out to say he will not. This challenge goes to all those who stood against Rupiah Banda, they must come out. If they remain silent and they are candidates, then they are cowards.”
Tetamashimba said several ministers and NEC members created division last year in that they failed to rally behind President Banda who was already acting president.
And Tetamashimba said investigations in the Ministry of Health which have revealed a K27 billion scam should be extended to all the ministries and government departments.
He said he was ready for the Ministry of Local Government and Housing to be investigated and audited by the Auditor General.
Tetamashimba said there should be no delay because certain individuals in various ministries might begin to destroy evidence after seeing what had happened at the Ministry of Health.
