THE Deputy Minister of Youth and Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) party's youth leader was arrested Tuesday over a stolen cellphone.

Nkulumane MP Thamsanqa Mahlangu was arrested at his offices and taken to Harare Central police station in connection with the theft of a cellphone belonging to war veterans’ leader, Joseph Chinotimba.

"The circumstances are mysterious but we are noticing a disturbing trend of MDC-T people being detained and prosecuted on dubious and trumped up charges," party spokesman Nelson Chamisa tried to downplay the incident by using this excuse.

Mahlangu shared a table with Chinotimba at the "Shared National Vision for Zimbabwe" workshop convened on July 17 by Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Arthur Mutambara.

Sources allege that during a lunch break, Chinotimba stood up to get some food and left his phone on the table. On his return, the phone had vanished.

Seniorr Assistant Police Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena said the deputy minister was identified by two women as the man having given the stolen sim card, belonging to chinotimba, to them. One of the women, from Hwange, said she was Mahlangu's girlfriend.

Sr Asst Commissioner Bvudzijena confirmed Mahlangu’s arrest, but did not disclose where he was detained.

“I confirm the arrest of Mahlangu on charges of theft which occurred on July 17, 2009 at the HICC. Two other people are being charged and these are Geraldine Phiri (21) and Patience Nyoni (27) of Hwange.

“They are being charged for breaching sections of the Telecommunications Services Act using a cellphone line without the consent of the owner,” he said.
