Dr Kenneth Kaunda has challenged the media in Zambia to remind government and political leaders of their responsibility to the nation. In an interview after he addressed women and children at Habitat for Humanity in Lusaka where he laid a foundation stone for the Tiyende Pamodzi community hall, Dr Kaunda said nobody needed to justify wrongdoing, regardless of who did it. He said it was the duty of the media to write about such issues.

“So you as our writers must go and remind us of our responsibility to the nation,” Dr Kaunda said.

He said everyone had a duty to fight and defend the country all the time by showing love to all mankind like God did regardless of where people came from.

Dr Kaunda also condemned the closure of Copperbelt University (CBU), saying two wrongs could never make a right anywhere in the world.

And Dr Kaunda welcomed the pact between the United Party for National Development (UPND) and Patriotic Front (PF).

Commenting on sentiments that PF and UPND could not work together because the two political parties were perceived to belong to specific tribes, Dr Kaunda said there was nothing wrong with the pact as long as those involved were honest, sincere and meant what they thought, said and did.

“If any parties which are tribally based and now decide to come together are a welcome move as long as they are honest and sincere,” he said.

Dr Kaunda also said although the country was making some improvements in the fight against HIV and AIDS, there was no room for resting.

“We need to fight on and on because AIDS is still very far from being won,” said Dr Kaunda. “AIDS can’t be fought with normal speed but we need to run to fight it.”

And earlier, Dr Kaunda urged supporters of Tiyende Pamodzi women’s project to continue so that more mothers could benefit from the initiative. He said the laying of a foundation marked a magnificent milestone in collective efforts to provide appropriate shelter for the use of mothers who were members of the Tiyende Pamodzi women’s project.
