DEAR EDITOR — Some people never cease to amaze. He is highly educated, regarded as one of Africa’s most prominent scientists. But questions are being asked about him, is it political immaturity or youthfulness? Is it his entrenchment in student politics?

Was he not properly groomed for such high political office? Is he confused, clownish or may be mad? Does he suffer from breathtaking irresponsibility? Meet Zimbabwe’s Deputy Prime Mini-ster, Arthur Mutambara, a man with a penchant for shoving his feet into his mouth.

Recently in Uganda Mutambara left African leaders shaking their heads in disbelief and feeling pity for himself and Zimbabwe, should he ever become the president of Zimbabwe, after he messed up an otherwise very good presentation by proffering views informed by a shocking inferiority complex, born out of many years of Western indoctrination and propaganda, the damage which progressive Africans are striving to repair.

That is what Zimbabweans are putting up with since the formation of the inclusive Government in February.

Many a pickle, makes a mickle, at the Nyanga ministerial retreat Zanu-PF ministers fired warning shots, their patience had been overstretched.

Having read Deputy Prime Minister Mutambara’s response to the Nyanga incident, I see some deliberate falsifying or distortions to events as recent as 2008.

DPM Mutambara is claiming that every one in the inclusive Government owes their position and role to the inter-party agreement (Global Political Agreement).

I quote: "There is no leader in this Government who was elected to their position, we are all products of negotiations, everyone of us in this inclusive Government is a creature of the Global Political Agreement.’’

DPM Mutambara should not misinform the nation. It is too soon to distort such recent an event.

The Presidium is not a product of the so-called GPA, or negotiations, which is why it was not on the agenda of the talks.

Mutambara, his immediate boss and co-DPM are, of course, such products.

The March 2008 elections were inconclusive. They did not produce a president according to the Constitution and electoral laws which also provides that the incumbent will retain his job and carry on with his mandate until a run-off election is held, and the winner sworn-in. The run-off was held and President Mugabe won.

If there was any fraud, it was on the part of those who coerced the electorate into submission through the wrath of the illegal economic sanctions. It is fraud when one’s purported support is derived from an abused people’s desire for relief from illegal economic sanctions. Voters should express their free will, not one obtained by duress from illegal economic sanctions.

The people should have political and economic freedom to express their free will.

There should be no talk of free and fair elections without addressing the real devil, the illegal sanctions leash that is tied and still hangs on the necks of the people.

The election run-off went on and President Mugabe won resoundingly.

President Mugabe was duly sworn-in on June 29, 2008.

There was no GPA then, hence the President is not a product of negotiations which had not started.

After the signing of the inter-party agreement, he was never sworn-in again, because his Presidency did not come by that agreement, nor was it created by that.

He was already the duly-elected President of the Republic before any negotiations. The inter-party agreement merely re-affirmed the obvious.

Mutambara should be sensible and responsible in his utterances and dealings with partners in the inclusive Government.

He is not dealing with robots.
