Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) members of staff have expressed suspicion with the continued reporting for duty of an intelligence officer who came in to act in place of MEC’s arrested staff.

MEC was embroiled in a crisis of sorts earlier this year, following the arrests of workers in the Accounts department. They were arrested on suspicion of financial mismanagement and misappropriation. Most of the members of staff have since been reinstated.

Government deployed some intelligence officers, a development that raised suspicion among members of staff, political parties and voters who felt the deployment was part of a larger vote rigging campaign.

Members of staff interviewed at the commission’s headquarters this week revealed that one of the intelligence officers was still reporting for duties.

“They is one officer remaining, though he reports for duties twice or three times a week. We are wondering, as members of staff, about his mission. What is he doing when the fired accounts department staffs are now here?” queried the staff member.

MEC spokesperson Fegus Lipenga (pictured)professed ignorance on the issue.
