Former Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) publicist, Dan Msowoya has lashed out at President Bingu wa Mutharika for pushing an implementation of an agenda that is aimed at discriminating the Northern Region describing it as an act of genocide.

Speaking an interview with Nyasa Times he said Mutharika should explain why is it that the North has too many university graduates than other regions before producing “hapless statistics” to back his quota systems which has “genocidal outlook”.

“It saves no purpose. Mutharika must explain as to how did the nation come into this situation? Why are there more graduates in the North with a much lower population?”

“When Mutharika targeted the Northern Region, the whole thing took a genocidal outlook. What this means is that in the next five to ten years the North will have fewer educated people therefore we are being shut out from contributing to the national development,” observed Msowoya.

He further said that by sidelining the person of the North in the education system, Mutharika is denying their right to education which they have worked hard to achieve hence as a people of the region, it has to be defended.

“We ought to defend this discriminatory policy and can’t just standby watch the integrity, rights and achievements being taken away by this DPP government,” said Msowoya.

President Mutharika -Chancellor of the University of Malawi, pctured – has backed the quota system for selecting students on district and region of origin, saying it will ensure even distribution of resources.

The Synod of Livingstonia, which has many followers from the Northern Region – has however condemned the system which has been re-introduced based on concerns that students from northern Malawi are securing a disproportionate number of university places.

But Goodall Gondwe, minister of local government and an influential political figure from the north has backed quota system.
