PATRIOTIC Front (PF) president Michael Sata has charged that former Attorney General Mumba Malila has paid for refusing to compromise his professional standing over the Dora Siliya saga.

Commenting on President Rupiah Banda’s decision to retire Malila following the expiration of his contract, Sata said the fact was in black and white because President Banda had warned that he would reorganise the Attorney General’s chambers following their conduct over education minister Siliya.

He said it was revealed that Siliya disregarded the advice of the Attorney General in her engagement of RP Capital Partners of Cayman Islands to evaluate Zamtel assets.

Sata said there was no doubt over the reasons President Banda gave for not renewing Malila’s contract.

“He Malila is paying for refusing to compromise his professional conduct, yes. He is paying for refusing to compromise his professional conduct. You put together all these things, the first one to go was the one at Tender Board, Kapitolo, then former Task Force on Corruption chairperson Maxwell Nkole, number two, and then Mumba Malila is the latest,” Sata said.

“This goes to show that anybody who offers professional advice will go. Rupiah Banda will not hesitate to fire any politician, or any civil servant who stands in his way or anybody who opposes him on anything.”

Sata said it was sad that a professional of Malila’s standing had been fired while liabilities like Vice-President George Kunda remained in office.

“George Kunda and Malila they are the ones who used to advise Mwanawasa on things like the Task Force, now Malila has gone and Kunda has remained, which means George Kunda changes like a chameleon to suit the environment,” said Sata.

On Tuesday, Malila said he was encouraged by the overwhelming support that Zambians rendered at the time when things were very difficult for him earlier in the year.

President Banda on Monday announced that Solicitor General Abyudi Shonga would perform the functions of the Attorney General following the expiry of Malila’s contract on December 1, 2009.
