AAG slams Chevron Caltex's discriminatory practice

THE Affirmative Action Group has slammed Chevron Caltex's decision to ask all fuel dealers who wanted to have a controlling stake in the company to reapply, saying the move was intended to exclude black dealers.

The dealers proposed to buy an ownership stake in Chevron Zimbabwe as a going concern and they sought security of the business under the Indigenisation Act. They also offered to purchase the retail sites as the sitting tenants.

"The National Executive Council of AAG is perturbed by reports of victimization against indigenous dealers of Chevron Caltex who made unsuccessful attempts to procure controlling stake in the company," read a statement sent by the group to the Zimbabwe Guardian.

"We understand that soon after the Ministry of Indigenization turned down their application, Chevron management ordered all dealers to reapply.

"It is, therefore, our suspicion that the re-application exercise is going to be used to eliminate some black dealers who had shown interest in acquiring stake in this company."

AAg claims that "these machinations are being orchestrated by a white director who is a former BSAP and Selous Scout operative who ordered in the meeting that ‘these buggers must be removed’".

The AAG delegation led by its President, Mr. Supa Mandiwanzira was scheduled to meet the Chevron Zimbabwe country representative, Ms Lilean Gora yesterday to discuss "these serious allegation that threatens economic independence of our black people".
