KAPIRI Mposhi Immaculate Heart of Mary assistant parish priest Fr Mathews Kasongo has said the Catholic Church will continue giving constructive criticism to the government to ensure that justice prevails amongst citizens.

Celebrating mass last Sunday, Fr Kasongo said the Catholic Church would strive to preach justice based on the gospel and that the church's bishops and priests would not be enticed into corruption.

“Some sections of society say the Catholic bishops and priests like criticising the government. Twafisaanga fye (We found this). Our criticism was started by Yahweh Jesus Christ,” said Fr Kasongo. “Jesus rejected corruption, nepotism and favouritism. The Catholic bishops' prophetic message with regard to the National Constitutional Conference is now being fulfilled. As we speak, most issues raised by our people have not been included. We shall continue giving positive criticism to the state in order to ensure that justice prevails amongst our people. You are even planning to kill our priest… mukaishamika you will just curse yourselves. You try to suppress Fr Frank Bwalya, another one springs up. You don't even know where he has come from, you will not stop us.”

Fr Kasongo said Catholic bishops and priests would not be swayed by corruption.

“Your envelopes that you are giving to the people won't help. We are not going to be enticed by your brown envelopes,” said Fr Kasongo, who was ordained about four months ago. “Nga emo muli muno, kaciteni report (If you are in here, go and report). Go and report that Kasongo has said this about the state. The Catholic bishops and priests will never be corrupt. Take it or leave it.”

And Fr Kasongo challenged Christians to scrutinise themselves before criticising others.

“It's not just about social, economic and political criticism. As Christians, do we scrutinise ourselves before criticising others?” asked Fr Kasongo. “You need to look at your moral standing before criticising others, you need to have integrity.”
