‘It’s unacceptable for politicians to continue abusing women’

IT is unacceptable and disgusting for politicians to continue abusing women for political mileage, a Kalulushi resident has charged.

Commenting on yesterday’s Post front page picture in which two women from the Zambia National Marketeers Association (ZANAMA) rolled on the ground as a mark of respect for Vice-President George Kunda at Kitwe’s City Square on Saturday, Abraham Daka said politicians must learn to respect the dignity of women.

“This (rolling on the ground) is tantamount to slavery!” exclaimed a visibly upset Daka. “I agree that we must respect our leaders but this kind of abuse by politicians on our women, mothers and wives is not right,” he said.

“Let us take an example of Mr George Kunda himself. Would he appreciate his wife to be crawling down for another man? Would he? If not, then why does he allow other women to lie on the ground for him?”

Daka urged all politicians to immediately stop using women as instruments of hero-worshipping them because they were not gods.

“He (Vice-President Kunda) is not a god. He is not a chief and so he should not allow people to roll for him like that. I actually would like to request the state to ban the idea of using women in this manner. No man would accept this. Why should she lie down for George Kunda when she probably doesn’t do that for the husband at home?”

Daka added that such behaviour did not happen in other countries and that it should also not be tolerated in Zambia.

“Do women lay down for Barack Obama or Gordon Brown? No! So why should this happen here?” This is totally unacceptable,” said Daka.
