MPULUNGU district council will soon demolish all poorly built structures, council chairman George Tembo has said.

The council has since given businessmen whose structures are in a poor state 60 days to beautify and properly construct them according to acceptable standards, failure to which they would be pulled down.

In an interview, Tembo said the exercise was in line with the council’s quest for cleanliness and to enforce the ‘Keep Mpulungu Clean’ campaign.

He said restaurants and bar owners who were not adhering to health standards would also have their premises closed.

Tembo said he was extremely disappointed with the dilapidated state of some premises offering goods and services to residents in the township and blamed the proprietors for the negligent manner in which their places were run.

“In this demolition exercise, in which we have the full backing and support of residents, we shall start with five structures located to your left just as you enter the township. And these include shops, the police club, bars and those lodging shelters at the back of these filthy structures,’’ he said.

Tembo said the structures were making the township look dirty and untidy.

In the programme, Tembo stated that the council would work in collaboration with state police.

He said he was equally not happy with the way Ngwenya market (the trading centre for fish and Kapenta on the shores of Lake Tanganyika) was being run.

“There is a lot of dirt in that market, restaurants are operated in unsanitary conditions and as council we want to ensure that cleanliness is brought there even if it means closing the market altogether. Moreover, that is the place where cholera mainly originates from in this town,’’ he said.

He said Mpulungu district council was committed to raising the standards of cleanliness in the township.
