DR Kenneth Kaunda has paid glowing tribute to the late British historian Basil Davidson, renowned for his writings against slavery, colonialism and supporting African countries’ fight for independence.

In his letter of condolences to the family of Davidson in the United Kingdom, Dr Kaunda, Zambia’s first president between 1964 and 1991, stated that he paid tribute to Davidson for his contribution to the noble cause of humanity and liberation of southern Africa.

“I have just learnt with great sadness of Basil’s passing away. I want you to know that many of us, who had the privilege of knowing him, grieve with you. I send you my heartfelt sympathy and condolences,” Dr Kaunda’s letter dated July 20, 2010 read in part.

“Basil’s enduring work as a journalist and historian made a great contribution to the liberation struggle and independence in Africa and above all helped to build our self esteem as Africans. His writings and support inspired many and enhanced the credibility of efforts of the millions involved in the ultimate triumph of the African people against colonialism and racist rule.”

Dr Kaunda stated that without men like Davidson, many of whom are unsung heroes, the history of southern Africa in particular would have taken a different course.

Davidson, who was born on November 9, 1914 in Bristol, England, died on July 9, 2010. At the time of his death, Davidson had written at least 30 books about Africa.
