COPPERBELT minister Mwansa Mbulakulima has said contractors doing shoddy works are frustrating the government’s quest to provide good infrastructure. And Mbulakulima has said the effects of corruption go beyond benefiting the people involved in the vice but affects the poor people gravely.

During a Construction Sector Transparency (CoST) Initiative workshop in Kitwe yesterday, Mbulakulima, who was represented by provincial deputy permanent secretary Christopher Mutembo, said there was need to promote accountability and transparency in the construction sector.

The workshop was called for small and medium-scale contractors on the Copperbelt.

Mbulakulima said the idea of the initiative CoST funded by the British Department for International Development (DFID) would help to monitor the processing of awarding contracts to contractors that would enhance professionalism in the construction sector.

Mbulakulima said the government was committed to delivering good infrastructure but was frustrated by contractors doing shoddy work.

“The effects of corruption affect the poor very much because they are the ones that remain using these poorly constructed infrastructure. Contractors that are doing shoddy works want to remain with change in their pockets or make more money out of substandard works because when you compare buildings that were constructed in 1930 to today’s, there is a huge difference,” said Mbulakulima.
