SOUTHERN Province minister Elijah Muchima has urged nurses to be compassionate and diligent as they execute their work.

Officiating at a combined Livingstone and Western schools of nursing graduation ceremonies and Livingstone General Hospital on Friday, Muchima said nursing was fraught with many challenges which required an exemplary attitude and work.

“Nursing is dynamic and I urge you to take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way to learn new things in order to be abreast with emerging diseases and what they demand to ensure safe and optimal care provision,” he told the graduates.

He advised the graduates to stay clear of HIV and if they were positive, to seek medical treatment early.
Muchima said the government was firmly and steadily implementing the human resource for health strategic plan (HRH) to help address the human resource crisis.

He said measures, which include among others training, recruitment and retention of health workers, had been put in place to ensure that there were adequate health workers.

Muchima said the structure of the Ministry of Health was 51,414 but as of September 2010, the head count was at 30,788.
