Editor,

I read the story intitled ‘Court convicts KCM of polluting environment’ (The Post, Friday November 26, 2010).

I could not believe that the magistrate only fined KCM only K21 million for polluting our precious environment.

With a lot of investments in the mining sector, I don't know what message we are sending to this conglomerates coming to operate in Zambia.

This for me is probably the joke of the year as KCM is smiling and giggling through writing a simple cheque when the consequences of their actions are too ghastly to contemplate. The effects of polluting the environment are going to catch up with us in the long run.

How can we promote environment laws to be user-friendly when one can get away with a light sentence? Many companies are happy to pay such mediocre fines (a lesser evil for them) than give up earning billions of kwacha regardless of the means used to earn the wealth.

More punitive damages need to be attached to environmental violators. This is not the first time big companies have violated environmental laws.

Unfortunately, such light sentences are setting a precedent for future cases. This judgment will forever be sighted in future law suits.

Happy Christmas to KCM for walking scot-free instead of taking responsibility for its misdeeds!
