EDITH Nawakwi says Ken Ngondo’s death has robbed the country of a gallant politician at a critical time. Commenting on the death of Ngondo, who was opposition All People’s Congress party president, Nawakwi said it was sad that an honest and dedicated political player had died when his services were most needed.
“It is extremely sad that a dedicated son of Zambia has gone so soon at a time when we are going through a critical political landscape. The country still needed his openness, his fighting spirit and all his services,” she said.
Nawakwi, who is opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) president, worked closely with Ngondo before he formed his political party.
She described Ngondo as a friend who detached politics from his personal interactions with other political players.
“I worked with him and differed with him on the political scene but he would never pass on the differences to personal interactions. Whenever we met, he would actually laugh and say he was still an FDD member,” Nawakwi said.
And Michael Sata described Ngondo as a clean and consistent fighter who contributed to the opposition political scene.
“His death is a loss to the opposition. He was a gallant fighter and his death is very untimely. We will wait and see what his party is going to do but he is irreplaceable,” said Sata.
Ngondo, 63, died yesterday around 07:30 hours at Lusaka Trust Hospital, where he was admitted for diabetes and high blood pressure.
He is survived by a wife, six children and four grandchildren.
Gathering is at house number 3B, Kafue Road in Roma township.
