PEOPLE in Plumtree and Beitbridge districts will next month receive local television transmission as engineers are finalising the erection of towers before installing the transmission equipment.

In an interview from Harare yesterday, Transmedia Corporation's chief operations officer, Mr Cloud Nyamudanda, said three quarters of the job has been done and added that they would complete the 120 metre towers in Plumtree and Beitbridge by the end of this month.

“We have covered a lot of ground and so far three quarters of the job has been done,” said Mr Nyamudanda.

“The tower in Plumtree is supposed to be 120 metres high and we expect to complete the remaining part of it by the end of the month and thereafter we will install the transmission equipment.

“If all goes well people should get transmission before Christmas,” he said.

Mr Nyamudanda said all the required equipment was now available adding that a similar project was underway in Victoria Falls although it is in its infancy.

“We have all the equipment for the projects and are only waiting for the completion of the towers before we install the transmission equipment. The transmission will cover a radius of 80 km in the mentioned areas.

“Actually Beitbridge will be completed ahead of Plumtree and after Plumtree we will go to Victoria Falls."

Plumtree, Beitbridge and Victoria Falls have been having problems of receiving broadcasting transmission for the past 30 years and communities have raised concern over the issue.

Last month, the Ministry of Media, Information and Publicity in liaison with Transmedia Corporation installed radio transmission in Plumtree after conducting a ground- breaking ceremony in September, commissioning the erection of a huge television and radio mast at Radar farm, 20km from Plumtree town.

According to Transmedia Corporation engineer at the site, Mr John Mbavha, the radio transmitter spans a radius of more than 100km, covering areas such as Ndolwane, Nyamandlovu and Mphoengs border post and areas beyond the borders.

At the moment the radio transmitters are installed on a TelOne tower on a temporary basis.

Radio Zimbabwe is being received on 105 Mhz while Power FM is on 101,4 Mhz.

Most people in remote parts of Matabeleland region subscribe to satellite television transmission and consume programmes from pirate radio stations.

The move to install television and radio transmission has been hailed as a step in the right direction towards facilitating community development.
