THE Drug Enfor-cement Commission (DEC) has arrested 11 people for cultivating and trafficking in different quantities of cannabis weighing over eight tonnes.

DEC public relations manager John Nyawali said the arrests were made over the Christmas weekend and among those arrested were Boniface Tabama of Mung’ambwa village in chief Matako’s Sichili area in Sesheke for cultivating over 8.7 tonnes of cannabis.

Tabama, 31, was arrested on Christmas Day with the help of local leadership when officers conducted an operation in the area.

Nyawali said Tabama was found to have cultivated the psychotropic substance together with five other villagers who bolted and were still on the run.

He described the operation as one of the largest single seizures of cannabis recorded this year.

Nyawali said others arrested in different parts of the country were 10 people for trafficking in different quantities of cannabis weighing 57 kilograms.

And Nyawali said the Commission was saddened that some peasant farmers had been contracted to cultivate cannabis, which was being earmarked for export to some, identified neighbouring and European countries.

He said plans were underway to incorporate agricultural extension officers in the fight against the cultivation of cannabis through identification of ideal cash crops and enhanced sensitisation.
