Even without 50% plus 1 Zambians will decide – MagandeTuesday, December 28, 2010, 20:15
Former Finance and National Planning Minister Ng’andu Magande has said whether the 50 plus one percent threshold is included or not in the new Constitution ahead of the forthcoming 2011 tripartite elections, Zambians will decide on who they want to lead the nation.
The former finance minister was reacting to concerns raised by various stakeholders that the exclusion of the 50% 1 vote clause in the new constitution will render the 2011 elections not free and fair.
Mr. Magande says he has faith in the Zambian people and that nothing will stop them from achieving the much needed change.
Speaking with Qfm in an interview, the former minister says the 50%plus one clause is something that Zambians can rely on, but that its absence should not compel people to lose confidence in the current electoral system.
He says Zambians have learnt lessons from past experiences and that the 2011 elections will be different as people have suffered too much.
Mr. Magande has also advised youths in the country not engage in political violence as they are an important resource who can be used in economic development.
