WE need to solidify our presence in rural areas because we are the government in waiting, says Lucas Phiri. In an interview yesterday, Phiri who is the new PF chairperson for Eastern Province said his committee had a big task to explain to the people about PF.

“We need to do a lot of civic education to our people. We need to tell our people that PF is a non-violent party and we don’t tolerate violent activities in the party,” Phiri said.

He said the committee would embark on a vigorous recruitment exercise in the province.

“We want to take advantage of the confusions that have erupted in MMD and recruit more people.

There are a lot of people who want to join PF from MMD when they heard that Lucas is now the chairperson. We want to finish MMD and UNIP in this province. As for UNIP, I know that it’s already finished but I want it to have no name here. There are a lot of people with big names who want to resign from MMD.”

He said one of the main tasks of his executive was to solve the problems in districts that were caused by people who were not mature in politics.

“As PF, we believe in team work, transparency and respect for all the people. We will work with all the people, all the tribes, everywhere. We want to show the people that we are not a violent party and our president is a non-violent man. Our president is not a violent man. He has lost elections dubiously in 2006 and 2008 but he didn’t tell his people to go to the streets despite all this,” said Phiri who had replaced Solomon Mbuzi.

Mike Tembo of Petauke is the vice-chairperson; Joseph Mutale of Katete is the new secretary, John Chibanga of Chama is the new treasurer and Enelesi Banda is the new chairlady.

Mung’omba Ngoma went unopposed as publicity secretary while Chiwele Maimisa is the new youth chairperson and Andrew Lubusha is his vice.

The PF held its conference at Tiko Lodge in Katete over the weekend.
