Inonge Wina has urged new Mongu Bishop Evans Chinyemba not to depart from Bishop Paul Duffy’s stance of speaking for the voiceless.

In an interview Wina, who is Patriotic Front (PF) national chairperson said Bishop Duffy has seen the perpetual lack of services the people of Western Province have gone through.

“I hope he Bishop Chinyemba would not depart from Bishop Duffy’s stance. He Bishop Duffy has been here for a long time and he has seen the perpetual lack of services of the people of Western Province and those who lived under these conditions turned to him to speak for them. That is why he raised their voice to make the politicians hear,” Wina said.

She said Bishop Duffy had spent most of his life in of Western Province and knew the problems of the people very well.

“Sentiments from the new Bishop are very encouraging as he has realised the under-development and poor state of the people. It is also encouraging that he is willing to engage the government if need be on issues that concern the poor people of the area,” Wina said.

She said it was the duty of the Church to be the voice of the poor.
“If we are Christians as we profess to be, we need to be involved with the people as they need a shoulder to lean on and a voice to speak for them, especially when political players seem to be concerned with their own plight than of the poor,” she said.

Wina said the Catholic Church under the diocese of Mongu had helped the people especially women and the youth on various issues of development.

She said Bishop Duffy and the Church needed to be commended for this gesture and was surprised that the area member of parliament and other Western Province MPs, apart from provincial minister Richard Mwapelwa, were not at Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral during Bishop Chinyemba’s ordination last Saturday in Mongu.

Bishop Monsignor Chinyemba takes over from Bishop Emeritus Duffy who has served the Mongu diocese for 25 years.
