PRESIDENT Rupiah Banda and his Malawian counterpart Bingu wa Mutharika last Monday held closed-door talks at Chipata’s Protea Hotel. President Mutharika arrived around 10:30 hours aboard a Malawi Airforce plane and was met by President Banda.
The two heads of state proceeded to Protea Hotel for a meeting which started around 11:00 hours. President Banda’s special assistant for press and public relations Dickson Jere said the meeting was held at President Mutharika’s request.
“The two heads of state had a very successful brief on a number of issues which for now will remain not for public consumption.
This is a normal diplomatic occurrence, each and everyday heads of state consult and if there are issues which need to be discussed they do exchange visits like this one. You recall not long ago we traveled to Malawi on a similar mission,” Jere said.
“There is nothing to speculate about these talks. They are a normal diplomatic occurrence, like I have said the Malawian head of state requested our President at short notice that he wanted to have this meeting with him which he accepted especially that he was in Chipata.”
After the talks, President Banda saw off President Mutharika before returning to Lusaka.
President Banda was in Chipata to attend the burial of his uncle Yeremayah Mwase Banda.
