COLONEL Panji Kaunda has strongly condemned suspected PF cadres that are violently attacking opposition MMD members and called on the police to arrest the culprits.
Commenting on reports that some people believed to be ruling Patriotic Front (PF) members are beating up MMD members as revenge for the brutality they suffered at the hands of the latter's reign, Col Panji urged PF members to adhere to the rule of law and stop the violence.
"The police must step in; we don't want to go back to the system where the police standby, seeing wrong things being done. It's not about politics but rule of law.
The MMD was saying, ‘if Sata wins, he will bring war', so if the PF cadres attack MMD members, the MMD will have a justification that ‘we told you that Sata will bring war'," Col Panji said. "If anybody is seen doing that, we want the police to come in and arrest that person.
We want this government to be a government in which people can have confidence in. You can't have confidence when people are harassing others just a few days in power. This must stop and the police should not wait for orders from Sata to be arresting people who are committing offences."
He said the police must be professional and curb violence.
"If they are unable to do it then they are not fit to be employed as police officers. As People's Pact Forum, we didn't support the PF to become another MMD. We shall oppose such activities; it doesn't matter whether it's from our partners or whoever it is," said Col Panji.
"Even William Banda, as bad as he was, he deserves his day in court. Nobody should harass him. If he has a case to answer, the police will take him to court."
