PRESIDENT Rupiah Banda must be held accountable for abuse of public resources, says a PF official. In an interview, Patriotic Front (PF) Central Province chairperson Benson Chali said President Banda was a selfish leader who was benefiting from state resources at the expense of the majority poor.

"Under Levy, (Mwanawasa) MMD was poor but all of a sudden, under President Banda, it has become one of the richest parties in the world," Chali said.

He said the MMD leadership lacked planning and was rigid hence it had destroyed industries in Central Province.

"Mulungushi textiles, KIFCO and Kapiri Glass products are all gone under the MMD. This is deliberate, to make people poor so that they entice them with gifts," he said.

He said being an agricultural area, people were bitter with President Banda's decision to reduce the number of fertiliser bags under the farmer input support programme from eight to four.

In the Mwanawasa regime, farmers under the programme were given eight bags of fertiliser leading to improved levels of production.

Chali said the PF had established structures from ward to provincial levels that would make it difficult for the MMD to win this year's elections.
