Dr Kenneth Kaunda has described the late cabinet minister Justin Mukando as a champion of the famous ‘One Zambia, One Nation' slogan. Speaking at the requiem service of Mukando at the Cathedral of Holy Cross in Lusaka yesterday, Dr Kaunda said Mukando had brought to his government then strong traits of great servanthood.
"He Mukando served this nation very well. I am fortunate to have been witness of that service. He was a minister of agriculture in my government. I was privileged to appointing him because of his ability to serve God's children in that extremely important area," Dr Kaunda recounted.
"As you have heard from his family, he loved his family as he loved Zambia. Wherever he went in Zambia, he understood the meaning of love, the One Zambia, One Nation. I don't remember anywhere anybody saying anything ugly about this man. Let's learn from young men of this type. He's gone at an early age, he's still young but he has served his Master on earth and I have no doubt he's now in the hands of the Lord."
The requiem service was attended by President Michael Sata, Chief Justice Ernest Sakala, Speaker of the National Assembly Judge Dr Patrick Matibini SC, and other senior government officials.
According to the programme, Mukando's body was soon after the service flown to Serenje district where it was lie in state in readiness for burial today.
He was born on 12th September 12, 1936.
